TENNIS COACHING LESSONS & HOW IT WORKS
INDIVIDUAL 1 -1 LESSONS
Booking a private individual tennis lesson in Cornwall could never be easier. Just a quick phone call, have a chat about your standard and ability, book a date and time at your convenience. Each lesson will be approximately 1 hour long.
BEGINNER TENNIS PLAYERS
If you are a complete beginner at tennis, don’t panic! I will teach you the 5 major strokes in tennis being the forehand and backhand groundstrokes, the forehand and backhand volley and the serve. I will do this in an easy and understandable way, breaking down each stroke into segments so you are able to perform them. At the end of a lesson,
I will give you something to practise, that you can go away and work on during the week between lessons. Remember, we go at your pace and we work together!
At an intermediate level, you will now be able to hit the 5 major strokes in tennis and it’s at this point where we will begin to sharpen your skils at more nuanced strokes, combined with slices and heavier topspin. We will help you develop approach shots to the net, overheads and more accurate spins on your serve adding targets to help give you an advantage. Drills will get slightly harder, still fun and enjoyable but now working on placement and consistency whilst looking at the tactical side of playing singles and doubles. By the time you are proficient at this level you should feel comfortable and confident in a match play situation in both singles and doubles. You may even feel ready to compete at tournaments.
ADVANCED & PERFORMANCE PLAYERS
At this particular standard, we will be working on higher performance drills, looking to improve your footwork and will still be a lot of fun but much much more intense with higher accuracy. Once you have reached this particular standard, we will be working at a much higher level of tennis at county, nationally ranked junior and professional player level. We will be working on high performance drills, which will include improving your footwork to a much higher degree. Increasing your fitness and nutrition, and working on the bio-mechanics of tennis. Tennis will still be a lot of fun but much more intense. We will watch video analysis and breaking down each stroke from the backswing, point of contact to the follow through on your ground strokes to make you that complete player, hitting your volleys with high accuracy and ease and turning your serve into a formidable weapon, helping you to reach your maximum potential.
Group lessons can be easily booked either by phone, email myself or via Redruth Tennis Club, Cornwall
Groups are completely different to individual tennis lessons but are still informative, educational and extremely enjoyable. Each week, I plan ahead and on the day of a lesson, we will go over 1 or 2 particular strokes or parts of a tennis stroke, breaking things down in a simple and easy to understand way, always working on the fundamental aspects and technique of the game. For instance, one week we may work on the serve or an aspect of it, and on another week it may be a backhand volley that we work on. I will give you a demonstration at the beginning, showing you exactly what we are looking for on a stroke and then do a mixture of live ball drills, coach feeds and player to player rallying. To take the pressure off, I would often work with the players inside the service boxes until they feel confident enough to start hitting from the back of the court. This is a method I often use with the serve as well. By the end of the lesson you would have increased your knowledge of the game of tennis and have something to work on during the rest of the week.
At an intermediate level, tennis players are able to hit with a higher amount of confidence and consistency and will be ready to play at club level. Each week, I plan ahead and work on 1 or 2 particular aspects of the game, whether it be technical or matchplay skills or even both. Teaching both singles and doubles strategies, increasing spin, power and consistency. I will usually use a mixture of live ball drills and player rallying, which is particularly good as it give me the chance to walk around and individually look at players. By the end of the lesson, you will have something positive in tennis to take away, something to work on in the week ahead and find that you have had a good and enjoyable work out.
ADVANCED AND PERFORMANCE GROUPS
This is the strongest level of group tennis, mostly made up of highly proficient but not solely advanced junior tennis players. Most players at this level maybe playing regular tennis tournaments, playing for the local club teams and playing tennis at county standard. This is often the most challenging group session for technique and fitness but is still a very enjoyable lesson. Each week, I plan ahead where students will have a mixture of time tested high performance drills and we will work on aspects of the game, working on footwork, consistency, power, matchplay in a singles and doubles format.
